30 September 2013 – Street Art – Illustrated Trip Report

I’ve been asked lots of questions about artists and locations of the photos in gallery from the Street Art trip.  I’m ashamed to admit I clearly didn’t pay enough attention – it was happening so fast, so here’s my attempt at a Trip Report with all the facts I remember.

The majority of the group travelled together from Stoke Mandeville.

First stop – The crypt of the chapel of St Mary Magdelene and St Edmund incorporated into the 1 Bishops Square (designed by Norman Foster).

Second stop coffee – obvious really.

Third stop – Meandered through Spitalfields Markets to “The Big Chill Bar”.  One of the group received a text from his daughter warning it wasn’t targeted at our demographic….We did a quick study and 90% of the customers were over 60!

The main event.  We met our guide, Ben Slow by the goat statue in Brushfield Street.  Ben is a very accomplished artist in his own right (well worth googling) and was the perfect guide.  Though Street Art grew out of graffiti, it is largely produced for free, with permission or invitation from landlords etc. and promoting the artist’s work that is available in local galleries.

Street Art is temporary in nature (in fact, there is none of Banksy’s work left in East London).  That didn’t prevent a feeling of great disappointment when one of the works we were hoping to see was defaced 10 minutes before we arrived.

Street Art can be anywhere!
